The potential of artificial intelligence to transform health care has been a celebrated and controversial topic. Things heated up in 2016 when Canada’s Geoffrey Hinton, known as “the godfather of AI,” argued that people should stop training to be radiologists because deep learning would do that job better within 5 years. Furthermore, just 4 years later, a model using Google’s AI technology proved to be as good as board-certified radiologists at detecting which women had breast cancer based on screening mammograms — and it showed promise at reducing errors. However, despite advancements in artificial intelligence, radiologists remain very much in existence and in demand. But this example does highlight the ability of machine learning to free up medical providers from mundane intellectual tasks, giving them more time to practise medicine. Also, while some experts predict that AI will have negative impacts on society, many agree that health care is the one area where it could improve, and even save, lives. Finally, given the immense amount of high-quality health data that Canada has, our country has the potential to become a global AI leader. Azra has led the deployment of AI-driven health care solutions, translating cutting-edge research into real-world clinical practice. The Vector Institute is a globally renowned AI institute in Toronto that empowers researchers, businesses and governments to develop and adopt AI responsibly. Robert Greer is a computer scientist, software engineer and systems architect in the Translational Physiology Lab, Department of Critical Care Medicine, at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). He is currently a member of working groups building the Artificial Intelligence in Medicine Program at SickKids. SickKids Artificial Intelligence (SKAI) is an enterprise project designed to ensure that machine learning systems impacting patients, families and staff are developed, deployed and scaled responsibly at SickKids. Alvina Nadeem is a professional engineer, coach and change management specialist who works at the intersection of health care, technology and lived experience. After navigating ovarian cancer in 2023, she began rethinking how we can leverage technology — on the condition that it be human-centred by design — to make care systems more responsive, trustworthy and human. Through her practice, Alvina N. Consulting, she collaborates with patient organizations and with health care, insurance and pharmaceutical partners to bridge silos and design change that works for real people, including those receiving care and those providing it. Kevin Dick is a multidisciplinary researcher, systems thinker and AI strategist dedicated to solving real-world problems through machine learning, computational modelling and high-performance computing. Kevin is currently focused on advancing personalized medicine and public health through the development and integration of AI models, using large-scale data sets from newborn screening and health registries. Canada spends hundreds of billions of dollars on health care each year. While our public health care systems are a source of national pride, we continue to face challenges with long wait times, physician shortages and disconnected care systems. These are complex issues that can’t be solved by simply increasing spending. The question is, What can be done to make real health system improvements? Panellists Dr. Anderson Chuck is the president and CEO of the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI). Under his leadership, the organization is evolving to better meet the needs of today’s complex and fast-changing health care systems — becoming more agile, more accessible and more impactful in the way it supports decision-makers across the country. Before joining CIHI, he served as chief health economist at Alberta Health Services, where he worked closely with the Ministry of Health, health delivery leaders, clinicians and other system stakeholders in shaping strategy for health system transformation, sustainability, financial performance and value. Dr. Chuck has a Master of Public Health and a PhD from the School of Public Health at the University of Alberta. Dr. Danielle Martin is chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM), University of Toronto. DFCM is the largest academic department of family medicine in the world and home to the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre on Family Medicine and Primary Care. Dr. Martin is also a founder of Canadian Doctors for Medicare, a nationwide, evidence-based, nonpartisan member organization dedicated to strengthening and preserving Canada’s publicly funded health care system. Her 2014 presentation to a United States Senate Subcommittee about the Canadian health care system has millions of views. She is the author of Better Now: Six Big Ideas to Improve Health Care for All Canadians and an active family physician whose clinical work has ranged from comprehensive family medicine in rural and remote communities to maternity care. Christopher Kuchciak is the manager of Health Expenditures at the Canadian Institute for Health Information and, as an economist, has provided data-driven insights on health expenditures for over 20 years at CIHI. Chris oversees data collection related to the National Health Expenditure Database (NHEX), the Canadian segment of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Health Statistics database and the Commonwealth Fund International Health Policy Survey. Mental health and substance use (MHSU) challenges continue to be very common across Canada — 1 in 5 Canadians experience an MHSU issue each year, and about 1 in 3 experience one in their lifetime. We have made progress in understanding and treating these concerns, but many Canadians still struggle to find timely care and feel that their needs are not being met. This webinar will be held the same day that CIHI releases Taking the pulse, 2025, which will include the latest data on 4 MHSU indicators, 2 of which are new. These indicators look at  Unmet mental health needs, to understand who is most affected by lack of access to mental health services  Wait times for community-based mental health counselling services, to understand how quickly care is being provided closer to home  Use of Integrated Youth Services, which helps reduce barriers to mental health care for children and youth  Follow-up care in the community for people who were hospitalized for MHSU, which is crucial for recovery and helps reduce the risk of readmission Panellists • Cheryl Chui will present the new data for the 4 MHSU indicators. As director of Health System Analytics at CIHI, she is responsible for leading the development of analytical products that address priority health information needs and promoting their use. Prior to joining CIHI in 2021, Ms. Chui held leadership roles in patient safety and quality improvement, strategic partnerships and digital health initiatives at a large hospital and research network in Toronto. • Dr. Mary Bartram is the CEO of Rideauwood Addiction and Family Services, a researcher/professor at Carleton University and a registered social worker. Dr. Bartram previously worked at Stepped Care Solutions and the Mental Health Commission of Canada. • Dr. Mario Cappelli is a child clinical psychologist and a clinician scientist working with children, youth, young adults and their families. He is currently the senior clinician scientist at the Knowledge Institute for Child and Youth Mental Health and Addictions, and an adjunct professor of psychology and psychiatry at the University of Ottawa. • Susan Palijan - is a caregiver partner and collaborative leader with over 20 years of experience in research, evaluation, and strategic planning across the health, education, and social services sectors. She has held senior advisory roles across provincial ministries, regional governments, and healthcare organizations, and is a PhD candidate in Health Systems Research at the University of Toronto. Susan’s research focuses on the experiences and well-being of unpaid caregivers of individuals with co-occurring mental and substance use disorders. Over the years, city leaders in Medicine Hat, Alberta, have tried to eliminate chronic homelessness. How? They have developed a system that places someone in need in affordable housing within 10 days. The city even hopes to wipe out poverty altogether. Many organizations, like the leaders in Medicine Hat, have been inspired by the collective impact framework. This new collaborative way of working includes a common agenda, shared measurement, mutually reinforcing activities, continuous communication and backbone support.
